Spend Steal Invest
11-06-08
This is about managing your shopping budget. Let's face it- we all go shopping, some more than others but it's part of being a woman in this region! There are a couple of tricks however to help guide us when shopping, so as not go over the top with spending...
The basics
Steal
A steal can be one of two things. The first is the cheapie that gets things done. These are the workhorses of your wardrobe - things like plain tees and the plain separates that chain stores do so well. Number two is the cheap thrill - super trendy of the moment pieces that you won't get a lot of wear from, but that make you happy in the interim. Things like a bright pink chiffon top that's perfect for summer.
Spend
A spend is classified as something a little more expensive than chain store pieces, that you'd get more wear from, and that is a little bit higher in quality. Your own budget will determine what you think is a "spend" item, but if you are spending a bit more money, then make sure it's something you really love.
Invest
Investment pieces are things that you will hopefully wear for a long time. I use the black dress analogy a lot, but it's not necessarily that classic. For some people a pair of really good quality jeans will be true investment buying because they form the basis of their wardrobe as a whole and they get a lot of wear out of them. For others an investment piece would be a great designer handbag (if only we could all be so lucky) or a basic shirt.
But how do I know what trends will last?
Some items you will be completely in love with and won't care if they're "in" or not, however in general a good way to stay ahead is to stay tuned in to what's happening on the run-ways overseas.
Does price mean quality?
Yes and no. Sometimes paying more can guarantee higher quality but it's best to use your own judgement instead of letting the price tag make the decision for you.
Do I need loads of money to look good?
No! I'll be honest; it is easier to build a wardrobe when you have more money at your disposal because you don't really have to worry. And when you are on a budget you have to hunt more and be careful about what you spend on. But isn't that half the charm of shopping? Going out and finding something that makes you feel awesome, and costs half the price of the "more expensive" version?
1: Shop the sales smart
Look for items that you can wear over and over, and snap them up at the reduced price.
2: Be patient
Don't rush out and buy something just because you feel like you need something right then and there - especially if you don't actually want or need it!
